How Effective are Job Boards?

The top three ways companies are finding talent is through social media, employee referrals and of course job boards. As a talent acquisition specialist, I can tell you that close to all companies have a position posted on a job board. Job boards such as Career Builder, Indeed, Zip Recruiter, and Monster should sound familiar to you. The process is employers post their open positions and candidates apply. The question I have for you is how effective are job boards?

Unfortunately, there isn't a clear answer and will differ between companies and industries. Here are some benefits to using job boards:

  1. Job boards can integrate with applicant tracking systems, which can make filtering candidates out easier as well as save you some costs.
  2. It's a great way to build your employer brand. For example, Glassdoor allows you to post jobs as well as give prospective employees an insight into your company with reviews.
  3. It builds a talent pipeline for jobs that you are always hiring for.
  4. There are niche job boards available for specific careers.

If using job boards is your only online talent acquisition strategy, then you're in trouble. You are missing out on the passive candidates as well as candidates that aren't using job boards because of late or no response from recruiters. You'll also be competing with the hundreds of companies who share the same position title you are trying to fill. Your goal should be to stand out and be unique.

An effective strategy that I like to implement with clients who are looking to improve their talent acquisition is inbound recruiting. By leveraging digital marketing, essentially you are turning prospective and passive candidates into customers. We are in a candidate driven market and the best talent is swayed by company culture, benefits and career growth. Top companies today are using social media platforms to get their message out to active and passive candidates.
